Bioland provider is recalling various types of sprout vegetables
The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety is currently warning of EHEC germs that are rife in various organic vegetables. The Healthy Powerfood GbR sprout manufacturer, which has been awarded the Bioland seal, is recalling several sprout products that were sold in health food stores, among others.
According to a warning from the consumer protection portal "lebensmittelwarnung.de", the following products by Healthy Powerfood GbR from Worms will be recalled with the minimum half-life date October 29, 2018:
- Alfalfa sprouts
- Skewers of salad mix
- Sprouts gourmet
- Sprouts on bread
Consumption is strongly discouraged
As part of product controls, verotoxin-forming Escherichia coli germs (VTEC) were detected in the sprouts. These pathogens are highly infectious. Already ten to 100 germs are sufficient to trigger diarrheal diseases, some of which are dramatic. The sprouts were offered in the organic shops "basic" and "Denns Biomarkt". The federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate are affected by the recall.
EHEC bacteria can cause bloody diarrhea
As reported by the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety, pathogenic enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli germs, or EHEC for short, are considered to be one of the most common causes of intestinal diseases with diarrhea worldwide. Recently there was another recall campaign for cheese due to EHEC bacteria. Infection can cause inflammation of the colon and bloody diarrhea called hemorrhagic colitis.
How does an EHEC infection progress?
EHEC bacteria cause diarrheal diseases in humans, which can sometimes lead to life-threatening complications. EHEC symptoms include severe bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, and fever. A disease lasts an average of eight days and then often improves suddenly. An EHEC infection is notifiable according to § 7 of the Infection Protection Act.
How dangerous are EHEC pathogens?
Especially in infants and children under the age of six, the elderly or immunodeficient people, a so-called hemolytic uraemic syndrome can develop after the disease. This causes damage to the blood vessels, red blood cells and kidneys. As a result, sufferers are often dependent on dialysis. Neurological disorders and damage to organs such as the pancreas and heart can also occur. In the worst case, there is a fatal multi-organ failure.
When should you see a doctor?
Anyone who has eaten the sprouts of Healthy Powerfood GbR with the minimum half-life date October 29, 2018 and subsequently suffers from one or more of the symptoms mentioned should quickly seek medical treatment and mention the consumption of the sprouts. "Preventing medical treatment without symptoms is not sensible," the manufacturer wrote in a press release regarding the recall. (vb)
