Increased cholesterol levels after menopause noted
When women have gone through their menopause, they may want to keep an eye on their cholesterol levels. Researchers have now found that post-menopausal women have higher cholesterol levels.
The latest study by the Australian National University (ANU) found that women have a higher cholesterol level after menopause. The results of the study were published in the English-language journal "Menopause".
More than 100,000 women were examined for the study
More than 100,000 women took part in the study. The results show that post-menopausal women were on average above the recommended levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL). LDL helps to carry fat molecules through the body and is often referred to as bad or unhealthy cholesterol.
Increased risk of heart attack and post-menopausal stroke?
"We found that post-menopausal women had higher cholesterol levels than pre-menopausal women," Ananthan Ambikairajah of the Australian National University said in a press release. These values can expose some women to a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke.
The cause of the increase in cholesterol is unclear
It could be beneficial for postmenopausal women if they contact their family doctor and have their LDL levels checked. However, according to Ambikairajah, more research needs to be done to find out why LDL levels rise after menopause. LDL is considered bad cholesterol, while HDL or high density lipoproteins are considered good cholesterol. However, the body needs both forms of cholesterol to work properly, Ambikairajah adds. The LDL profiles vary for all women depending on other risk factors. The current study shows that postmenopausal women should check their LDL levels to see if they are at particular risk. Women can discuss with their family doctor what can be done about these risks. (as)
