Is grape seed extract suitable for weight loss?
Overweight and obesity have significant negative health effects, but losing weight is difficult for many people. Simple ways to support weight loss are therefore urgently needed. Grape seed extract could be helpful here, according to a recent study.
An Iranian research team has analyzed the effects of grape seed extract (Vitis vinifera) in overweight and obese people and has found significant positive effects of the natural active ingredient. Her study results were published in the specialist magazine "Phytotherapy research".
Grape seed extract as a nutritional supplement
"Grape seed extract is a natural nutritional supplement that is known for its various health benefits, including its anti-inflammatory effects," the researchers report. To what extent the extract can also have positive effects when losing weight has so far been unclear.
Randomized double-blind clinical trial
In the randomized double-blind clinical study, the scientists examined the effects of the grape seed extract on 40 obese or overweight participants. For this purpose, the test subjects were randomly divided into two groups: one received grape seed extract (300 mg / day) for a period of twelve weeks, the other a placebo. All participants simultaneously followed a diet with restricted calorie intake (around 250 kcal less than the estimated energy requirement).
Extensive effects of the extract are documented
The researchers not only checked the effects on body weight, waist size and body mass index (BMI), but also identified various biomarkers such as the inflammation values or the neuropeptide Y (involved in controlling hunger). In this way, they were able to document extensive positive effects of the extract.
Decreasing body mass index and waist circumference
"The reductions in body weight, body mass index, waist circumference and waist-hip ratio were significantly higher in the grape seed extract group than in the placebo group," reports the research team. Furthermore, significantly lower values of the neuropeptide Y, the tumor necrosis factor alpha and the highly sensitive C-reactive protein (CRP) were found in the extract group.
Higher weight loss and lower inflammation levels
Based on the data obtained, the researchers conclude that a supplement with grape seed extract in combination with a reduced-calorie diet has significant positive effects on weight loss and inflammation levels in obese or overweight people. Although it is not yet possible to make a clear statement in view of the small number of participants in the study, grape seed extract could “play an effective role in the treatment of obesity,” the research team concluded.
